KROMME BOOM (2024)

Private art commission, Florida

KROMME BOOM (“curved tree” in Flemish) is about a tree in Great Falls (Maryland) located near my home. It is tall and curved and crooked. Its stature and elegance make it an ideal focal point for meditation. The tree, along with the surrounding area, has become sacred space for me.

The crooked tree is in the Goldmine Loop, which was an island away from the rigid confines of the pandemic which began in 2020. Early morning runs in the park were a ritual and I made a point to include the crooked tree on my route.

I began making this piece with a map of the area in mind, thinking I would move out from the center straight toward the paper’s edge. I veered off, however, instinctively, into another shape at the top left of the piece with curves and offshoots to account for the literal trails, streams, and downed trees. Figuratively, the angles, shapes, and bursts are indicative of life during those years.

The piece is 20x26” (unframed) and comprised of watercolor paper, acrylic paint, and liquid gold leaf. Watercolor paper was used for the “canvas” and paper chards, which are painted with acrylic paint and hand cut. Each piece was glued one at a time. Liquid gold leaf was used on the edges and as filler throughout the piece.

MOSS FIELD (2024)

Art collection of Katya Marin and Mike May, Bethesda, Maryland

MOSS FIELD is an appreciation of moss and a fantasy of a field covered in moss. While moss has been a point of beauty for many years, it was not until the pandemic, which began in 2020, that I began to observe moss with time and quiet.

Sometimes when I am hiking, just the sight of puffy, green moss makes me feel happy, but in the moment, all I can say is, “Look! Moss!”

There are remarkable places in Acadia where moss grows with reckless abandon and one could easily feel transported into a children’s book about magical people, places and things. MOSS FIELD is one of those magical places with different, textured mosses in green hues and golden and white streaks enhanced by trickling sunlight.

MOSS FIELD is 11x15" (unframed) and comprised of painted (acrylic) and cut paper chards made from brown paper grocery bags; each piece glued onto a canvas of watercolor paper.
